Retailers and suppliers in the DIY, garden, and pet sectors are set to adopt QR codes powered by GS1 across the Benelux region.
GS1 Netherlands announced this significant development in April 2025, following the signing of a letter of intent by prominent brands in the Netherlands and Belgium.
The goal is to begin sector-wide implementation of next-generation barcodes that offer improved traceability, transparency, and access to product information.
Addressing New Consumer and Industry Demands
This initiative is part of a broader, global transition away from traditional linear barcodes we’ve come to know for the past 50 years.
Consumers want more detailed product information. Regulatory demands are rising. And supply chains require better traceability and efficiency.
Consequently, traditional barcodes have reached their limits.
Key Benefits of GS1-Powered QR Codes
In response, the industry is moving toward next-generation 2D barcodes — specifically QR codes powered by GS1 and GS1 DataMatrix. These codes support the GS1 Digital Link standard, connecting physical products to online resources in a seamless way.
In the DIY, garden, and pet sectors — where consumers often seek usage instructions, certifications, or safety information — the benefits are especially clear.
Key advantages include:
- Higher data capacity than linear barcodes
- Mobile-friendly and scannable by consumers
- Provides access to detailed product information
- Enhances traceability and transparency
- Improves supply chain efficiency
- Compatible with current checkout systems
Implementation Strategy Is Set for 2027
Retailers, suppliers, and GS1 will work together to conduct pilot programs, create practical implementation plans, and raise awareness within the broader industry.
The goal is to move forward together at a sustainable pace, with alignment across the sector. It’s assumed that this collective effort allows for a smoother rollout and encourages broader industry participation.
Several key players have already signed on to the initiative, including:
- Intergamma (Gamma and Karwei)
- Maxeda (Praxis)
- Hubo Belgium
- Deli Home
- Eltra
- PPG
- Pokon Evergreen
- Trendy
- BTC Retail
- Hima
- Calodar
